Blessings bloom in gypsy-led Bloom

There’s something uplifting about the summer range from Boom Shankar. There’s a vibrancy and sense of fun inspired by the gypsy fabric that forms the basis of the new collection.

Boom Shankar is the brainchild of Dui Cameron. After traveling through Asia for 10 years and living in India for much of that time, Dui returned to Australia in 1996. Her designs reflect her love of colour. Her mantra and mottos is “big love – big live”.

“I began the label because I wanted to bring wonderful Indian saris – both antique and contemporary – to Australia,” she says.  “I set out to retain the passion and authenticity of luxurious Indian textiles while complementing them with popular Western fabrics like denim and corduroy, and in doing so have designed a range of clothing that is relevant to Australian lifestyles.”

The label’s name Boom Shankar is a Hindi word used to bless. Dui says blessed is invariably how women feel when they wear her designs.

Boom Shankar’s latest designs are based on gypsy fabric from west India’s Gujarat region. The range includes skirts in two distinct fabrics. The first design features a predominance of strong pinks, blues, yellows and greens. The second design features patchwork fabric in more muted tones.  Every garment is a one-off – distinctively different in its blend of fabrics, many of which incorporate inlaid mirrors. The skirts come in two lengths, knee-length and mini. They are all kaleidoscopic in colour and have a real depth of texture through the hand-embroidered designs.

The summer collection also comprises a new range of Boom Shankar’s trademark satin-lined sari tops and skirts, along with hipster pants in cotton, denim and corduroy.
