BOOM Yoga - It's a thing!

BOOM Yoga - It's a thing!

To celebrate World Yoga Day and the importance of this old spiritual practice originating from India, we at Boom Shankar wanted to gift our community a little something. We teamed up with local yogi Emily Mills and will be gifting a series of online free classes to help start your day. Yoga has been a very important practice for our beautiful founder, Dui, after having serious health issues years ago. To hear Dui's story and enjoy the first of our Boom yoga videos, please check out the video at the end of this blog, or you can check it out on our YouTube Chanel

But first, as per tradition, we wanted to ask our new Boom friend a few questions...

Hello Emily 🌺

Firstly, can you please tell the Boom community a little about yourself?

I’m Emily, a Sunshine Coast local who is passionate about all things wellness and sunshine! I’m a wife, a mum of two active children and a business owner. I own and operate a boutique events management company called Beyond Experiences and I recently launched a sister company called e v o k e which focuses on the curation of transformative experiences. I’ve also been a certified yoga instructor for the last 10 years, teaching in studios, to private clients and corporate groups. I hold an authentic passion for holistic health and wellbeing through movement, breath, stillness, visualisation and nutrition.

What inspired you to become a yoga teacher?

Initially yoga for me was very much a physical practise used to balance and strengthen my running and triathlon training, however it wasn’t long before my practise deepened into a more spiritual one, becoming more a way of life as opposed to simply time on my mat. As well as wanting to learn more about yoga and deepen my practise, I wanted the ability to share this wonderful practise with others, so I completed my 350hr Yoga Teacher Training on the Sunshine Coast in 2011.

Have you always done yoga, or was there something in your life that made you look towards yoga for healing reasons?

In my 20s I started practising yoga to counterbalance my sports training. It was an opportunity to stretch out the body, use different muscles and prevent injury. I started my yoga journey primarily practising Bikram yoga, which makes sense as I was so focused on the challenge and strength training, which Bikram provided. With this regular practise came a new sense of focus and space in my mind. I then continued to explore other forms of yoga and fell in love with Vinyasa flow, which is the style I teach most these days.

I know there are many benefits of doing yoga, but what are 3 main ones you could tell someone who’s never done it before?

Number 1 benefit would be that yoga invites you to connect with your breath and within this simple breath awareness comes a deeper connection to your mind, body and spirit which has a ripple effect and benefits all elements of your life. Wow, that's huge in itself! It physically creates space, strength and stamina within your body. It’s nature is non-competitive and non-judgmental so you can show up on your mat however you like each and every practise. And a fourth, if I may! Yoga is available for absolutely everyone, it places no barriers on age, physical capabilities, gender, personality and you can roll out a yoga may just about anywhere!

You also have a business called Evoke, can you tell us a little about this business?

e v o k e was born from my passion for everything wellness and I wanted to create a platform whereby I could make a positive impact on people’s overall wellbeing through a large variety of holistic wellness practices. At e v o k e we curate transformative experiences for conscious brands and people. Our mission is to work with conscious brands, corporations and change-makers wishing to offer purpose-led experiences, such as events, retreats and adventures, to their audiences. We also offer bespoke wellness retreats for private groups and schedule our own e v o k e Retreats.

Are there any events coming up you’d love to tell the Boom Community about?

We have an e v o k e  Winter Wellness Escape in the Noosa Hinterland on 30 July to 1 August 2021. This 2-night retreat has been curated to offer a range of wellness experiences that will inspire, inform and nourish your body, mind and soul. This intimate retreat offers 5 guests the opportunity to relax and be supported by a group of wellness experts. Each day will include a mixture of Yoga, meditation and breathwork to provide a gentle start and finish to the day’s activities.

A private chef will prepare a plant-based menu and guests can enjoy a Creative Expression Masterclass with Sunshine Coast watercolour illustrator, Cass Deller, an Ayurvedic Nutritional Wellness with Ayurvedic expert Wayne Celeban from Yukti, and a 2-hour luxury day spa experience at the award winning ikatan Day Spa.

Our winter collection is called ‘Kindness’...
How do you define kindness, or what’s your interpretation of kindness?

Kindness for me is firstly starting with yourself and being kind, gentle and caring towards your number one ... you. Once you nourish yourself with kindness, in the form of self care, you will be the best version of yourself to give kindness to others. Showing up as your authentic self and sharing acts of respect, truthfulness and thoughtfulness is my definition of kindness. xx

Is there a particular moment in kindness in your life - given, received or even observed - that stands out to you?

I think when kindness comes to you when it’s least expected can be the most powerful form of kindness, especially when it’s gifted to you from a stranger. It can also be the smallest of gestures that can be the most powerful. I remember a day when my first baby was only a few months old and my simple daily tasks had become so much harder.. He was in a carrier on my

chest (where he lived for most of his first year!) and I was loading my groceries up onto the check out. A lady behind me took over this task in such a gentle, no-fuss manner that brought me to tears. It was such a small act of kindness, yet so powerful to me in that moment. There was an unspoken understanding of how I was feeling and how she could help.

What does it mean to live a big, beautiful life?

That’s a big question but such a great one! For me personally, it’s staying aligned with my true-self. Giving love and being loved, surrounding myself with a like-minded tribe, spending time in nature and nourishing my body with sunshine, organic food, movement & mindfulness.
